Pemba
Pemba was founded by the Niassa Company in 1904 as Porto Amèlia at the peninsula's south western tip and has grown around a port, after a queen of Portugal. The city is renowned for its Portuguese colonial architecture. It was renamed Pemba at the end of Portuguese rule, in 1975.
Pemba is the capital of Cabo Delgado Province and lies on the peninsula in Pemba Bay. Pemba is a coconut tree roofed town with an untouched shoreline populated with giant B saobab trees. It's a peninsula surrounded by a clear, warm aquamarine coloured ocean.
During low tide the sea pulls back an astounding 2km, revealing a coral reef that fills the horizon and that can be walked right up to if you are up to the trek. The ocean is ideal for snorkeling and swimming and has very small waves which can be enjoyed in a variety of ways; from kayaking, fishing and sailing.
Pemba is the fourth largest town in Mozambique and there you can find banks, travel agents, restaurants, stores and fabulous bakeries. There is also an ethnic market where you can buy handmade arts and crafts, furniture, items of clothing, local foods and spices. The most popular beach in Pemba is Wimbi beach that has white beaches and a variety of restaurants.
The climate in Pemba is tropical and humid and temperatures range from 23 to 43 degrees Celsius and the temperature of the sea ranges from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.
